Continuance of marital life: the hidden dimension of sexual relationship in marriage; a qualitative study in Iranian Women

Objective: There are number of reasons that sexually motivate women in the literatures. Iranian married women have different views to sexuality. But no study explores women’s purposes of sex in Iran. The current study aimed to identify the reasons that motivate women to engage in sexual intercourse with their husband, among a sample of Iranian married women.
Material and Method: 20 participants were recruited through purposive sampling of married women in Tehran; data collection consisted of semi-structured in-depth interviews. Conventional content analysis was used to analyze the data.
Result: The results are reported in four categories to present the participants’ reasons in sex. The categories consist of 1) Meeting the physical needs of couple 2) Meeting the emotional needs of couple 3) Taking control of marital life 4) Dominant cultural values.
Conclusion: Using a qualitative research, Iranian married women's gains in sex were determined. Our findings highlight the potential role of cultural values as a women’s motivator for engaging in sexual intercourse.
