Reference intervals for serum testosterone levels in Korean: results from large health examination data

Objectives: Management of male infertility or androgen deficiency requires accurate serum testosterone (T) measurements with valid reference interval. However, there has been little information in the literature regarding established reference intervals of serum T level in Korean papulation. The objective of this study was to develop valid reference intervals of blood samples from healthy population.
Methods: This observational study was performed using health examination cohort of Asan Medical Center including 6,967 subjects. Correlations between serum T level and other demographic parameters were evaluated. We established age-adjusted serum T level reference intervals of Korean papulations.
Results: A median age of total populations were 53.0 (range; 21-90) years. The median serum T level was 4.2 (IQR, 3.2-5.4) ng/mL. Serum T level was correlated with age (r=-0.062; p<0.001; by the Pearson’s test), height (r=0.037; p=0.002), body mass index (r=-0.127; p<0.001), body fat percentage (r=-0.183; p<0.001), and serum triglyceride level (r=-0.092; p<0.001). On the other hands, serum T level was not correlated with muscle mass index (p=0.186), serum cholesterol (p=0.955), serum PSA (p=0.529), or prostate size (p=0.101). Fitted percentiles for serum T level according to age-groups are shown in Figure and Table. The older age-group were, the lower reference values were. However, the degrees of difference are tiny.
Conclusions: Using large cohorts of health examination allowed construction of robust reference ranges for serum T level in Korean papulation. In clinical practice, this customized values for Koreans should be considered.
